What is a psychologist?
Patients often wonder what the difference is between a psychologist, a psychotherapist and a psychiatrist.
Here is a clear definition of each term to help you understand better.
A psychologist has a university degree and has followed a minimum of 3 years’ study (‘Masters’ degree, previously a Bachelors degree). They are not a doctor and so consequently do not prescribe medication. The title of psychologist is recognised by the Belgian State and is protected by law. To work as a ‘psychologist’, the professional must be recognised by the Commission of Psychologists, who will assign them a membership number, guaranteeing the validity of their title. psychologist psychotherapist counselor counsellor
Certain health insurance companies offer part-reimbursement on consultations. Private insurance companies support a much larger part of the fees, or even all the fees in some cases. Find out more information directly with your insurance company to know the exact reimbursement figures because they differ greatly from one organisation to another.
A psychotherapist and a counsellor practise psychotherapy. They can be either a psychiatrist or a psychologist, but they can also have no kind of university training. In fact, there is no ‘psychotherapist’ diploma and this title is therefore not covered by laws. Therefore, anyone can, in theory, call themselves a ‘psychotherapist’ or ‘counsellor’.
A psychiatrist is a doctor. A psychiatrist has studied Medicine, and then specialised in Psychiatry. They can therefore prescribe medication, and part of the fees will be reimbursed by your health insurance. For most common questions, problems and worries a psychiatrist is not your best choice. psychologist psychotherapist counselor counsellor
